SolarEdge vs Huawei FusionSolar

Huawei dominates the string inverter market, but SolarEdge operates in a different category: module-level optimization with exclusive Buck-Boost patent and data stored in Europe.

✓ SolarEdge wins on: Buck-Boost patent, SafeDC safety, cybersecurity and granular monitoring
Technical comparison
⚡

Exclusive Buck-Boost patent

SolarEdge

SolarEdge holds the Buck-Boost optimizer patent: it steps voltage UP and DOWN at module level, keeping the inverter at constant voltage (99% efficiency). Only SolarEdge can do this.

Huawei FusionSolar

Huawei uses Buck-only optimizers (voltage reduction only). The Boost is done by the inverter after losing energy. Lower real system efficiency.

🛡

SafeDC™ without external device

SolarEdge

SafeDC™ reduces DC voltage to 1V per module automatically on AC disconnection. No additional devices needed. Sense Connect prevents arc faults before they occur.

Huawei FusionSolar

Huawei requires an additional physical device on the roof to reduce DC voltage. More cost, more potential failure points.

🔒

Cybersecurity and data sovereignty

SolarEdge

Data in own data center in Germany. Software developed in EU and USA. Complies with UK PSTI and RED directive 2014/53/EU. Audited by independent bodies.

Huawei FusionSolar

Chinese company. Data managed from China. Several countries have restricted Huawei inverters in critical infrastructure for cybersecurity reasons.

📊

Real module-level monitoring

SolarEdge

Full visibility of each individual module. Remote diagnostics. Over 4 million systems monitored. Automatic production alerts.

Huawei FusionSolar

String-level monitoring. Locating a faulty module requires physical inspection on the rooftop.

📅

Warranty: 25 years on optimizers

SolarEdge

12 years on inverter extendable to 25. Optimizers: 25 years. Over 128 million optimizers shipped. Local support in Iberia.

Huawei FusionSolar

10 years standard on inverter. No own optimizers with equivalent 25-year warranty. Centralized support.

🏗

Flexible design without restrictions

SolarEdge

Strings of different lengths, multiple orientations and tilts. Up to 2,000W difference between strings on the same inverter. Ideal for complex rooftops.

Huawei FusionSolar

Strict restrictions: same-size strings, same orientation and tilt within the same MPPT.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For residential installations where safety, granular monitoring and per-panel independence are priorities, SolarEdge is the superior option. Huawei offers a good string inverter, but SolarEdge adds distributed optimization at each module: every panel acts completely independently, which can mean up to 10% more annual generation in normal conditions — and significantly more with partial shading, differential soiling or mixed orientations.
With SolarEdge, each module has its own Buck-Boost optimizer running it autonomously at its maximum power point (MPPT). In a standard Huawei string system, the worst-performing module drags all others down. This means SolarEdge can generate up to 10% more annual energy in normal conditions and 20-30% more in partial shading situations.
Technically, Huawei inverters work well. However, there are two relevant concerns: cybersecurity — data is managed from servers in China under China's National Security Law — and electrical safety: Huawei requires an additional external device to reduce DC voltage on the rooftop. SolarEdge integrates SafeDC™ which reduces to 1V automatically with no add-ons.
SolarEdge offers 25 years on optimizers and 12 years (extendable to 25) on inverters. Huawei offers 10 years standard on inverters, extendable with a paid extension. The difference is significant for an installation meant to last 25-30 years.
Yes, significantly. With SolarEdge, only the shaded panel reduces its output — the rest continue at 100%. With standard Huawei string configuration, one shaded panel reduces the entire string's production. SolarEdge's advantage can be 20-30% or more depending on the degree of shading.
SolarEdge user data is stored in SolarEdge's own data center in Germany, within EU data protection jurisdiction (GDPR). Huawei FusionSolar data is managed from infrastructure in China.
Yes. SolarEdge optimizers allow installing modules from different manufacturers, power ratings and tilts in the same string, without restrictions. With conventional Huawei strings this generates mismatch losses.
