SolarEdge vs Enphase

Enphase offers DC→AC microinverters at each module. SolarEdge offers DC→DC optimizers + a central inverter: more efficiency, better battery integration and no per-module power limit.

✓ SolarEdge wins on: total efficiency, battery integration and maximum power utilization
Technical comparison
⚡

Total efficiency: 98.7% vs 97.7%

SolarEdge

DC→DC optimizer conversion (99.5%) + inverter (99%) = 98.7% total efficiency. Every generated kWh is maximally utilized.

Enphase

Enphase microinverter: DC→AC conversion at each module. Total system efficiency up to 97.7%. 1% less energy produced per year.

🔋

Battery: 1 conversion vs 3 conversions

SolarEdge

DC-coupled battery (SolarEdge Home Battery): just 1 conversion. Module→battery→grid efficiency: 93.3%. Fewer energy losses.

Enphase

AC battery with Enphase: 3 conversions. Battery→grid efficiency: 86.9%. A 6.4% difference in energy lost in each charge/discharge cycle.

🌅

MPP range: 8V-60V vs 27V-45V

SolarEdge

SolarEdge optimizers active from 8V, MPPT from 8V. Production earlier at dawn, later at dusk and better performance on cloudy days.

Enphase

Enphase IQ needs 22V to produce and 27V for MPPT. Fewer productive hours per day. Worse performance under low irradiance conditions.

📈

No power clipping per module

SolarEdge

SolarEdge S500: 500W input → 500W output. No clipping. The module produces its maximum power and the optimizer transmits it fully.

Enphase

Enphase microinverter: 480W module → only 325W output (32% clipping). Generated energy that is irremediably lost.

💾

DC surplus storable in battery

SolarEdge

DC oversizing in SolarEdge allows capturing surplus energy during peak hours and storing it in battery instead of losing it.

Enphase

In Enphase systems, clipping above the microinverter power is permanently lost. It cannot be stored or recovered.

📅

Simplified warranty management

SolarEdge

25 years optimizers + 25 years inverter (extendable). Single management point. If something fails, diagnosis is remote and precise.

Enphase

25 years per microinverter. A faulty rooftop microinverter requires remote identification and physical replacement on the roof by qualified personnel.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Both systems optimize module by module, but with different architectures. Enphase uses microinverters (DC→AC at each panel); SolarEdge uses DC→DC optimizers plus a central inverter. Result: SolarEdge has 1% higher total efficiency (98.7% vs 97.7%). With battery the difference is greater: SolarEdge performs 1 conversion (93.3% efficiency) vs 3 conversions in Enphase (86.9%). Each SolarEdge panel acts independently — without power clipping — generating up to 10% more than unoptimized systems.
The SolarEdge system (optimizer + central inverter) achieves 98.7% total efficiency. The Enphase system achieves up to 97.7%. That 1% difference means, in a 5 kWp system over 25 years, approximately 1,250 more kWh of energy produced. Additionally, Enphase clips output power: a 480W module only produces 325W (32% loss).
SolarEdge is clearly superior for battery integration. The SolarEdge battery is DC-coupled: 1 conversion, 93.3% efficiency. The Enphase battery is AC-coupled: 3 conversions, 86.9% efficiency. A 6.4% difference in each charge/discharge cycle accumulates significantly over 25 years.
Both handle shading module by module, so in this respect they're comparable. However, SolarEdge produces more gross energy per module because it doesn't limit output power (S500: 500W input → 500W output). Enphase clips power: a 480W module only produces 325W at the microinverter. With SolarEdge there is no clipping.
1% more in system efficiency, plus savings from having no clipping. In 480W modules with standard Enphase microinverter, the 32% clipping means that energy is permanently lost. With SolarEdge, each module produces its full potential. The result can be 5-15% more annual production depending on module size and type.
With Enphase, if a microinverter fails on the rooftop, you need to locate which one (remotely) and send a technician to physically replace it on the roof. With SolarEdge, if an optimizer fails, the system detects it remotely with module-level precision and replacement is simpler with fewer active components on the roof.
SolarEdge is more compatible: the optimizer doesn't limit output power — if 600W goes in, 600W comes out. Enphase microinverters have a fixed maximum output power: with 480W+ modules the clipping is 25-32%. For latest-generation 500-700W modules, SolarEdge extracts the module's full potential.
